British Values and SMSC
Personal Development, SMSC & Fundamental British Values
At Jigsaw, we are committed to nurturing well-rounded, compassionate, and resilient young people who are fully prepared for life in modern Britain.
Our Personal Development curriculum weaves together Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development with the Fundamental British Values:
-
Democracy
-
The Rule of Law
-
Individual Liberty
-
Mutual Respect
-
Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
We deliver this ethos through three core pillars: our Jigsaw PSHE scheme, the No Outsiders framework, and our Pol Ed assembly programme.
1. Jigsaw PSHE Scheme
A mindful, spiral approach to personal, social, and emotional wellbeing.
We use Jigsaw PSHE as the foundation of our personal, social, health, and economic education. Jigsaw provides a structured, age-appropriate spiral curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6.
Each term, the whole school explores a shared "Puzzle" theme:
| Term | Jigsaw Puzzle | Core SMSC & British Values Focus |
| Autumn 1 | Being Me in My World | Democracy, rights and responsibilities, creating class charters |
| Autumn 2 | Celebrating Difference | Anti-bullying, understanding diversity, mutual respect |
| Spring 1 | Dreams and Goals | Resilience, ambition, supporting individual aspirations |
| Spring 2 | Healthy Me | Physical & mental health, making positive choices, staying safe |
| Summer 1 | Relationships | Healthy friendships, communication, appreciation of family |
| Summer 2 | Changing Me | Managing change, personal growth, moving on |
Every Jigsaw session opens with mindful breathing and self-reflection, building emotional literacy, self-worth, and social skills in a safe environment.
2. No Outsiders: Inclusion and Diversity
Teaching children that everyone is welcome in our school.
We embed the No Outsiders framework to ensure every child feels a sense of belonging and learns to celebrate diversity.
Grounded in the Equality Act 2010 (British Law), No Outsiders uses high-quality picture books across all year groups to explore differences in race, faith, gender, family structures, disability, and age.
Key Themes of No Outsiders:
-
Everyone is Welcome: We teach children that regardless of background or appearance, no one is ever left out.
-
Active Respect: Children learn to move beyond simple tolerance toward active kindness, respect, and empathy.
-
Understanding Rights: Lessons link directly to British law, teaching pupils their rights and how to stand up for the rights of others.
3. Pol Ed Assemblies
Practical citizenship, safety, and community awareness.
Our assembly timetable is enriched by Pol-Ed (West Yorkshire Police Education programme) resources, which connect classroom values to real-world choices, local laws, and community safety.
Through age-appropriate Pol-Ed assemblies and discussions, children explore:
-
The Rule of Law in Practice: Why laws exist, how police support our communities and understanding rights and consequences.
-
Staying Safe: Online safety, personal safety, recognising safe relationships and making informed choices.
-
Active Citizenship: How individual choices impact others, preventing anti-social behaviour and taking pride in our local community.
How SMSC and British Values Look In Jigsaw:
| Value | How We Bring It to Life |
| Democracy | Voting on class decisions, pupil voice surveys and Jigsaw "Being Me in My World" lessons. |
| Rule of Law | Co-created class rules, understanding boundaries through Jigsaw and Pol-Ed safety/citizenship sessions. |
| Individual Liberty | Encouraging personal choice, freedom of speech in a respectful environment and individual goal setting. |
| Mutual Respect & Tolerance | Celebrating diverse cultures and faiths, No Outsiders picture-book discussions and peer mentoring. |
Through this joined-up approach, we ensure that spiritual, moral, social, and cultural education is not just an extra subject—it is at the centre of everything we do in Jigsaw.
